ADHD and executive function
ADHD & executive function counselling in Burnaby
You made the list. You knew the plan. And somehow it’s 9pm and none of it happened. Again.
Tell us what’s going on and we’ll match you with the right person, usually within one business day. No referral needed, and many extended health plans cover sessions.
Insight can tell you what to do. It rarely builds the systems that make doing it possible.
If that cycle sounds familiar, you’re not lazy and you’re not broken. Executive function challenges (trouble starting tasks, chronic disorganization, follow-through that doesn’t stick, ADHD whether diagnosed or suspected) are real, and talk therapy alone often isn’t built to address them.
There are two ways we work on it here. In counselling, Winnona brings an occupational therapy lens to the practical side (environment, routines, the systems that make follow-through possible), while Zoe and Nelson work with ADHD and executive function as part of individual and family counselling. And separately there’s Groundwork: twelve weeks of accountability check-ins, groups and practical resources, run by our Institute interns at reduced rates, for when the missing piece is repetition rather than insight.
You might be here because…
- You start things well and finish almost nothing
- The system works for three weeks, then quietly collapses
- You’re bright, capable, and consistently late
- Your child has a diagnosis and you’re recognising yourself in it
- You’ve done the therapy, understood the pattern, and still can’t execute
Structure isn’t a personal failing you’re missing. It’s a system you haven’t had yet.
What working on this looks like
-
A free consultation
We talk about what’s going on and whether we’re the right fit. No cost, no obligation, and no pressure to book a session at the end of it. Your consent form and intake questionnaire arrive when you book, so the conversation isn’t spent on paperwork.
-
The first few sessions
We look at what actually happens in your day rather than what the plan said would happen: where tasks stall, what the environment is doing to you, and which parts are shame rather than capacity. Those need different interventions.
-
Counselling, Groundwork, or both
Some people do well with counselling that takes executive function seriously. Some need the scaffolding instead: check-ins, a group, and resources, which is Groundwork. Plenty of people do both, and they’re separate bookings. The consultation is where we work out which you actually need.

Common questions
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to come?
No. Plenty of people we work with suspect ADHD and have never been assessed, and the executive function work doesn’t depend on a diagnosis. We’re not a diagnostic service ourselves, and Groundwork isn’t a diagnostic pathway. Where a formal assessment would help, we’ll say so and point you to it.
How is Groundwork different from counselling?
Counselling addresses the emotional and relational layer. Groundwork isn’t therapy at all. It’s structured support: short accountability check-ins, a small group, and practical resources, run by our Institute interns under licensed oversight. Different job, different price, and you can do both.
Is this for teens as well as adults?
Yes. Zoe and Winnona both work with younger clients in counselling, and Groundwork runs for teens with more parent involvement in the planning.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book counselling in British Columbia without a doctor’s referral. Some extended health plans ask for one before they reimburse, so it’s worth checking yours.
Do you offer sessions online?
Yes. Sessions are available in person at our Burnaby office and online to anyone located in British Columbia.
