Transitions and decisions in life

Counselling for life transitions & decisions in Burnaby

You can argue both sides perfectly. That’s the problem.

Tell us what’s going on and we’ll match you with the right person, usually within one business day. No referral needed, and many extended health plans cover sessions.

Some decisions resist being thought through

You’ve made the list. You’ve asked everyone whose opinion you trust. And you still wake up at 3am rehearsing the same two futures: leaving the job or staying another year, ending the relationship or trying once more, moving your parents in or admitting that you can’t.

Other transitions don’t ask your permission at all. A separation, a diagnosis, a layoff, a child leaving home, a move across the world that made sense on paper. The decision was made for you, and what’s left is a harder question: who are you now that the old arrangement is gone?

This work isn’t about getting someone else to make the call. It’s about separating the parts of the dilemma that are genuinely about the decision from the parts that are about what you’re afraid the decision would mean about you, and getting your own judgment back when it’s gone quiet underneath everyone else’s expectations.

You might be here because…

  • You’ve been on the edge of the same decision for months and can’t move
  • A change you didn’t choose has already happened, and you’re looking for footing
  • The life you built looks right from the outside and doesn’t feel like yours
  • You moved countries, careers, or roles, and the version of you that worked there doesn’t work here
  • Everyone has an opinion about what you should do, and you can’t hear your own anymore

Nothing has to have gone badly wrong for this to be worth an hour of someone’s full attention.

What working on this looks like

  1. A free consultation

We talk about what’s going on and whether we’re the right fit. No cost, no obligation, and no pressure to book a session at the end of it. Your consent form and intake questionnaire arrive when you book, so the conversation isn’t spent on paperwork.

  2. The first few sessions

We map the actual decision, which is usually not the one you’ve been arguing with yourself about. That includes the cost of each direction, not just practically, but in terms of who you’d be disappointing, and which loyalties you’d be breaking. Those are the parts that keep people stuck for years.

  3. The ongoing work

Sessions are 60 minutes. Where a transition has already happened, the work is often grief before it’s planning, in whatever order it insists on. Where a decision is still open, we test your judgment on smaller things first, so that by the time the big one arrives you trust the instrument you’re using.

Common questions

Will you tell me what to do?

No, and you should be suspicious of a therapist who would. What we will do is make the decision clearer than it is in your head at 3am, including naming the parts you’ve been avoiding, which is usually what’s holding the whole thing still.

Is this still therapy if nothing is actually wrong?

Yes. A fair amount of useful therapy has nothing to do with a diagnosis. Being at a genuine fork in your life is one of the better reasons to have a trained person’s full attention for an hour a week.

What if I make the decision after two sessions?

Then we stop, or we spend a few more sessions on living with it well. Nobody here is interested in keeping you longer than the work needs.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book counselling in British Columbia without a doctor’s referral. Some extended health plans ask for one before they reimburse, so it’s worth checking yours.

Do you offer sessions online?

Yes. Sessions are available in person at our Burnaby office and online to anyone located in British Columbia.
